Description
The Ranch Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising and engaging campers throughout the camp day while creating a safe, supportive, and fun ranch camp experience. This role leads horseback riding activities including trail rides and riding lessons, assists with feeding and daily care of horses, and helps maintain barn and riding areas as needed. The Ranch Camp Counselor serves as a mentor and positive role model to campers, supports cabin and group supervision, facilitates camp activities, and partners with camp leadership to deliver high-quality ranch programming while upholding YMCA values and safety standards.

Qualifications
- High School Diploma required; college coursework or degree in Education, Recreation, Equine Studies, or related field preferred.
- 1–3 years of experience leading and supervising youth in group settings.
- Basic understanding of youth development principles and age-appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Demonstrated horseback riding proficiency with the ability to safely instruct riders of varying ages and skill levels.
- Knowledge of horse care, tack, barn management, and equestrian safety practices.
- Experience or familiarity with ropes courses, climbing, team building, hiking, canoeing, biking, or other outdoor adventure activities preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with youth, families, and staff.
- Ability to teach, coach, and facilitate skill development in others.
- Creative, energetic, and flexible with strong problem-solving skills and initiative.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while serving as a positive role model.
- Strong risk awareness and commitment to maintaining a safe program environment.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification may be required.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to actively supervise children in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments for extended periods of time.
- Must be capable of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, and lifting up to 30 pounds.
- Must be able to safely participate in and demonstrate horseback riding and related activities.
- Must be able to visually monitor participants in all program areas.
- Must be able to hear whistles, alarms, and verbal cues in active outdoor settings.
- Clear speaking voice required to effectively instruct and manage groups.
