SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT:
The Elementary School Principal is the instructional leader of the school community, responsible for establishing an instructional vision and a focused plan for improving student achievement; monitoring and supervising instruction; supporting teachers in improving their instructional practice; creating a community of continuous learning for all staff and students; and fostering a culture of high expectations for all students. In addition, the principal is charged with building strong partnerships with families and community, creating a safe, supportive school climate, and effectively managing operational, technical and staff issues to promote instructional progress.
The principal is also a member of the Orting School District leadership team. The principal works collaboratively with the district leadership team to advance the Orting School District Strategic Plan and Goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:
Clearly communicate the district's and school's vision and mission to your school community and maintain a positive and safe school climate.
Effectively implement the district's CEL 5D+ instructional framework to support staff in inquiry and professional growth.
Provide targeted professional development aligned to strategic ends and goals to support student learning.
Understand and communicate Washington State Learning Standards to develop and implement a guaranteed and viable curriculum.
Support the development, growth and effectiveness of Professional Learning Communities.
Analyze and utilize data effectively to guide and support student learning and monitor progress.
Collaborate with administrative leadership team and staff to develop and implement a multi-tiered system of support.
Collaborate with Human Resources Department in recruiting highly qualified job applicants and making recommendations for hire and to resolve employee relations issues.
Conduct investigations and discipline employees appropriately per district policy and negotiated agreements.
Develop and foster community connections that will enhance the educational experience of all students.
Evaluate classified and certificated employees according to best practices, local bargaining agreements, and district policy.
Develop a safe learning environment and report issues to authorities as necessary; child abuse, suspicious activity etc.
Engage with colleagues in alignment with the district's norms, collective commitments and decision making filters.
Effectively manage building budget in collaboration with the budget committee.
Facilitate and lead the implementation of the school improvement plan.
Identify social, emotional and learning barriers for students and understand how to address those needs.
Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge and experience using a research-based framework for improving instructional practices. Orting uses the CEL 5D+ framework.
Demonstrated ability to manage systemic change and successfully implement reform initiatives to produce significant gains in closing the achievement gap.
Demonstrated success managing a school.
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of data to assess student progress and inform instructional practice and system improvement needs.
Demonstrated ability to lead and implement a multi-tiered system of support.
Effective interpersonal skills in managing and interacting with diverse groups of stakeholders while minimizing conflict and building consensus.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Demonstrated proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software. Must be able to use management systems to perform routine tasks.
Ability to handle intense or controversial situations with levity and humor while maintaining professional composure.
Ability to maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
Ability to demonstrate a commitment to personal growth and learning.
AWSP LEADERSHIP FRAMEWORK:
The principal standards of professional practice define expectations for principals in the Orting School District. The standards help frame a comprehensive definition of effective leadership. The successful candidate will engage in inquiry to select goals and to provide individual and school growth and improvement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities in providing leadership in a complex educational organization including:
Possess or qualifies for Washington State Principal's certification
Has completed a Master's degree in an approved college program
A minimum of four years of successful teaching experience
Elementary school experience preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Perform work beyond a standard 40-hour work week when workload requires. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. This position requires attendance at Board of Director meetings, community meetings, and other duties that extend beyond normal working hours.
REPORTS TO: This position reports directly to the Superintendent.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Work Year July 1 - June 30; 260 day contract
Salary 2025-26: $160,235 - $172,556 (DOE)
2026-27: Subject to Principal Memorandum of Agreement
Professional Responsibility Stipend (PRS) - 10 days at per diem
Twenty-six (26) annual vacation days; cash-out up to five (5) days annually
Thirteen (13) paid holidays
Four (4) annual personal days accumulative to six (6); eligible to cash-out two (2) days annually
Twelve (12) annual sick days
Professional Development - $2,000 per year
Dues contribution for AWSP and ASCD memberships
Cell phone stipend
Per Diem rate based on 218 days
Medical, dental, vision insurance coverage

BENEFITS:
Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours an employee is anticipated to work during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Employees anticipated to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for the following benefits: medical, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance, long-term disability and the employee assistance program.
The district's healthcare benefits are administered by the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA) under the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB). Benefit eligible employees also qualify to optionally participate in deferred compensation/403B plans, dependent care flexible spending/health savings accounts, and additional life insurance and/or added long-term disability coverage through employee contributions. Sick leave, vacation, personal leave, and any paid holidays are aligned with bargaining agreements by association, as listed on our website.
Other benefits include VEBA, which is a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) and serves as a way to contribute dollars on a pre-tax basis for out of pocket benefits costs, whether it be for medical, dental or vision premiums, or any other out of pocket medical expenses. This benefit is available, based on the outcome of annual voting of employees by group.
