Description
Opportunity InformationGould Medical Group is looking for a BE/BC Hematology/Oncology physician in Modesto , CA.
Sutter Health is building a new cancer center in Modesto, currently under construction; a major capital investment in the market. This is a generational opportunity to build a unified, high-performing oncology service line across Gould Medical Group's Modesto, Stockton, and Tracy service areas.
GMG already has substantial clinical depth to build on - 8 medical oncologists and 5 radiation oncologists across the service area, supported by a broad bench of surgical subspecialists covering nearly every major tumor site. What this program needs now is a physician leader who can unify these existing resources into a coordinated, nationally competitive cancer program, close key gaps in coverage, and serve as the face of the program as the new facility comes online.
We are seeking an established, well-regarded medical oncologist with the credibility, vision, and operational skill to lead this initiative from the ground up.
Position Details:
- Starting base salary: $600,000
- Salary guarantee
- RVU Bonus potential during salary guarantee
- RVU based compensation model starting in year 2
- Sign-on bonus
- Fellowship stipend available
- Opportunity to teach and mentor internal medicine residents at local hospital residency program
- 4 1/2 day work week
- Onsite/local support from Radiation Oncologists, Breast Surgeons, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, financial navigator and cancer navigator

- Partner with Sutter GCV leadership to align GMG's oncology strategy with the build-out and opening of the new cancer center and ambulatory surgery center.
- Lead physician recruitment for the service line, with immediate priority on closing the gynecologic oncology gap (currently zero coverage; 2-3 physicians targeted).
- Establish and chair a multidisciplinary tumor board program spanning breast, thoracic, GU, colorectal, UGI/HPB, gynecologic, cutaneous, neuro, head & neck, and endocrine oncology.
- Drive program quality and accreditation strategy (e.g., Commission on Cancer and related standards) appropriate to a comprehensive community cancer program.
- Represent the program to referring physicians, hospital leadership, and the community as a visible, credible clinical leader.
- Partner with GMG operations and finance leadership on service line growth planning, capacity, and capital priorities tied to the new facility.
- Mentor and support the existing medical and radiation oncology group, fostering a culture of collaboration across employed and independent surgical colleagues.
- Represent GMG and the Greater Central Valley division at the system Cancer Service Line level, actively participating in systemwide decisions related to oncology strategy, care delivery, quality, program development, and alignment with Sutter Health's broader cancer priorities
Qualifications
- MD or DO, board-certified in Medical Oncology (Hematology/Oncology background also considered).
- Established regional or national reputation as a clinical and program leader in oncology, with the credibility to recruit top talent to the market.
- Prior experience building or leading a multidisciplinary cancer program, service line, or department strongly preferred.
