Description
About the Practice
Melfi Law, LLC is a boutique, management-side labor and employment firm representing private sector employers nationwide. We represent a small group of clients at the forefront of their industries who expect excellent work from their lawyers. Based in Oswego, New York, our docket spans traditional labor representation, employment litigation in federal and state courts, and the day-to-day counseling that keeps our clients out of court in the first place.
We are seeking an experienced attorney to collaborate with our team in managing matters end-to-end, including drafting briefs, taking depositions, arguing motions, counseling clients, and preparing for trials. This is an exceptional opportunity for an attorney who excels in independent thinking and is seeking a flexible schedule and growth in employment defense work.
The Role
A highly valued member of our team will work directly on a varied book of business, including:
Traditional labor matters — labor arbitrations, collective bargaining negotiations, and unfair labor practice proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board.
Employment litigation — defending employers in federal and state court actions arising under Title VII, the ADA, the ADEA, and analogous state and local statutes.
Advice and counseling — day-to-day guidance on workplace investigations, discipline and discharge, leave administration, wage and hour compliance, and policy development.
Requirements
Qualifications
We are seeking candidates whose experience and judgment reflect the following:
A Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. law school.
Admission to, and good standing in, at least one U.S. state bar.
A minimum of three years of full-time practice on the management side of labor and employment law, or in employment defense litigation.
Demonstrated excellence in legal research and writing — for example, EEOC and NLRB position statements, post-hearing and arbitration briefs, and dispositive motions.
Experience defending employment claims in federal district court, ideally across multiple jurisdictions.
A track record of taking and defending depositions in employment matters, with particular value placed on experience deposing plaintiffs.
Preferred Experience
Prior representation of employers in the food service, transportation, health care, construction, or aviation industries is a meaningful plus, as is exposure to multi-jurisdictional federal court practice.
