About the Role

Reporting to the City Manager, the Director of Public Works oversees all public services operations, including water, wastewater, roads, parks, facilities, and cemetery services.  This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for guiding a dedicated team while ensuring the reliability, safety, and long-term sustainability of the City’s infrastructure.

The department includes:

• Four  full-time staff and two part-time (plus seasonal part-time support)
• 20 miles of water main, 17 miles of sanitary sewer, and 13 miles of storm sewer 
• Four lift stations, 17 miles of roads, parks, facilities, and a cemetery
• Support from various City departments 

 Key Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise Public Works staff and daily operations
• Plan and oversee infrastructure projects and capital improvements
• Prepare and manage departmental budgets
• Ensure compliance with EGLE, EPA, MDOT, and other regulations
• Coordinate with engineers, community members, contractors, and developers
• Oversee water and sewer systems, roads, and city facility operations
• Prepare reports, specifications, and bid documents
• Advise the City Manager and City Council on infrastructure needs
• Prepare and present information to City Council, boards, community members, and other organizations
• Respond to emergencies and support after-hours operations as needed

Preferred Qualifications

• A minimum of five years of experience in public works, utilities, or related field
• Leadership or supervisory experience
• Experience with water and wastewater systems
• S-2 Water Distribution (or ability to obtain)
• CDL (or ability to obtain)
• Background in engineering, construction management, or municipal operations
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
