About the Role
Reporting to the City Manager, the Director of Public Works oversees all public services operations, including water, wastewater, roads, parks, facilities, and cemetery services. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for guiding a dedicated team while ensuring the reliability, safety, and long-term sustainability of the City’s infrastructure.
The department includes:
- Four full-time staff and two part-time (plus seasonal part-time support)
- 20 miles of water main, 17 miles of sanitary sewer, and 13 miles of storm sewer
- Four lift stations, 17 miles of roads, parks, facilities, and a cemetery
- Support from various City departments
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise Public Works staff and daily operations
- Plan and oversee infrastructure projects and capital improvements
- Prepare and manage departmental budgets
- Ensure compliance with EGLE, EPA, MDOT, and other regulations
- Coordinate with engineers, community members, contractors, and developers
- Oversee water and sewer systems, roads, and city facility operations
- Prepare reports, specifications, and bid documents
- Advise the City Manager and City Council on infrastructure needs
- Prepare and present information to City Council, boards, community members, and other organizations
- Respond to emergencies and support after-hours operations as needed

Preferred Qualifications
- A minimum of five years of experience in public works, utilities, or related field
- Leadership or supervisory experience
- Experience with water and wastewater systems
- S-2 Water Distribution (or ability to obtain)
- CDL (or ability to obtain)
- Background in engineering, construction management, or municipal operations
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
