Description
R_358403 - Automated Underwriting LeadWe are seeking a talented individual to join our Portfolio Solutions - Fast Track team at Marsh Risk. This role will be based in London, Norwich or Birmingham. This is a hybrid role that has a requirement of working at least three days a week in the office.
The Automated Underwriting Lead is responsible for managing the rules engine that drives underwriting decisioning across Fast Track. This includes decisions made with no human referral, underwriting recommendations provided to Account Managers, decisioning for the initial in-scoping process, and the automated bind process.
The role ensures that decisioning operates within the limits of the Underwriting Framework and delivers accurate, reliable, and commercially appropriate outcomes. Where outcomes are not binary, the rules engine should support Account Managers to make sound value judgments on the risk in question.
Working closely with the Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO), Technical Underwriting Managers, and the Underwriting Oversight & Controls Manager, the Automated Underwriting Lead will continuously improve the performance, reliability, and sophistication of the rules engine. The role will also identify opportunities to enhance the Underwriting Framework itself to enable greater automation, while maintaining underwriting accuracy and positive outcomes for clients and insurers.
We will count on you to:
- Own and manage the rules engine that underpins automated underwriting decisioning for Fast Track.
- Ensure the engine supports:
- automated underwriting decisions with no human referral
- underwriting recommendations for Account Managers
- initial in-scope / out-of-scope decisioning
- automated bind processing
- Ensure all decisions made by the rules engine remain within the boundaries of the Underwriting Framework.
- Ensure the rules engine provides support to Account Managers when outcomes require judgment rather than a binary automated decision.
- Partner with the CUO,Technical Underwriting Managers, and Underwriting Oversight & Controls Manager to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Identify opportunities to improve the underlying Underwriting Framework to enable greater automation.
- Monitor system performance, decision outcomes, and exception trends to identify issues in the decisioning logic.
- Investigate and correct defects, inconsistencies, or gaps in the rules engine.
- Coordinate with relevant stakeholders to resolve logic issues quickly and effectively.
- Work closely with underwriting leadership, controls, and technical underwriting specialists to ensure the rules engine supports business goals.
- Act as a key bridge between underwriting strategy, framework design, and automation delivery.
What you need to have:
- Experience in underwriting automation, pricing model development, decision engines, or rules management.
- Strong understanding of underwriting frameworks, referrals, and decision support processes.
- Ability to translate underwriting rules and commercial intent into operational logic.
- Analytical and detail-oriented
- Innovative, but disciplined
- Strong technical and commercial judgment
What makes you stand out?
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working collaboratively with underwriting, controls, technical, and operational stakeholders.
- Familiarity with automation governance, testing, and continuous improvement is highly desirable.
- Collaborative and influential
- Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, evolving environment
- Focused on accuracy, reliability, and scalable automation
