The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Policy Program is seeking a candidate from the Earth and environmental system sciences for a 1-year policy fellowship to help the nation and the world deal with issues in weather, water, and climate. The position will join a dedicated team in which each member contributes to a wide range of activities, plays both supporting and leading roles, and develops new initiatives.
Position Overview:
The Policy Fellow will help apply science for public benefit and may explore the policy dimensions of their scientific field, develop expertise in new areas of science and policy, help initiate novel activities within the AMS Policy Program, and contribute to our ongoing activities. The Policy Fellow will likely contribute to policy studies and analysis (www.ametsoc.org/studies). Specific opportunities, roles, and responsibilities vary based on the interests and backgrounds of the fellow and ongoing projects.
The Policy Fellow will:
contribute to ongoing policy studies, including those seeking: to improve the weather enterprise; to build the climate enterprise; and to promote collaborations among health and the geosciences,
lead in specific areas of interest, and/or
initiate new Program activities.
Qualifications:
We anticipate that the successful candidate will serve as a postdoctoral fellow, an IPA, or as a sabbatical (i.e., possess a Doctoral degree). In exceptional circumstances, candidates with Bachelor's and Master’s degrees will be considered, as will candidates with equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training, in the humanities, liberal arts, social sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences, and engineering.
Candidates should possess:
excellent writing ability;
enthusiasm for collaboration and teamwork;
strong interpersonal skills;
aptitude for problem solving;
capacity for analysis, research, and synthesis of information.
Our intent is to fit the position to the unique interests and abilities of the person based on their potential to contribute to the AMS Policy Program.
This is a full-time position, and salary will be commensurate with education and experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits package including generous health, dental, and vision coverage, paid vacation, sick time, and holidays to a Policy Fellow hired as a W-2 employee. Alternative arrangements, including IPA, sabbatical, and visiting appointments may also be possible, based on the needs and interests of the applicant and Program. The Policy Program is based in our Washington D.C. office. This position may be on-site, hybrid, or remote based on the interests and needs of the applicant and the Program. Candidates must be eligible for employment in the United States, and AMS does not sponsor applicants for work visas.
Background:
The AMS Policy Program promotes informed and thoughtful decision-making through analysis, communication, innovative problem solving, collaboration, and research. We help policy-makers and scientists understand one another and work together more effectively.
The AMS Policy Program uses three primary approaches. We:
build capacity for societal engagement within the weather, water, and climate enterprise;
inform the broader society about weather, water, and climate opportunities and challenges; and
advance knowledge and understanding at the interface of science and policy, particularly related to critical societal issues.
How to Apply:
AMS intakes applications through its ADP portal; please click here to apply directly. We require a resume, a brief writing sample (no more than 1-2 pages) that has been minimally edited by others, and a cover letter that outlines your interests in policy, societal engagement, and your areas of interest for this position.
What to Expect
We understand the application and interview process is an investment for candidates; you are trusting us with your time, so we will do our best to make it as smooth as possible for you and work with your schedule. Interviews will likely take place remotely.
