You will serve as a SUPERVISORY METEOROLOGIST in the FLEET WEATHER CENTER NORFOLK WITHIN THE OPEATIONS DEPARTMENT (N3) of NAVAVNFCSTCEN.

Duties

• You will provide authoritative meteorological and oceanographic guidance that directly impacts the safety and mission success of U.S. and Allied Forces.
• You will lead efforts to develop and implement advanced weather output and toolkit.
• You will analyze climate and ensemble models for long-range strategic planning.
• You will integrate data to support global Department of Defense aviation and maritime initiatives, including providing optimal ship routing and destructive weather warnings.
• You will provide direct supervision and professional development activities.
• You will lead and conduct advanced research focusing on weather phenomena, atmospheric modeling, and the integration of meteorological data.
• You will advise senior leadership, government agencies, and stakeholders on meteorological trends and their implications for operations.
• You will represent the command in meetings, conferences, and working groups related to meteorology and atmospheric sciences.
• You will deliver lectures and briefings on all aspects of marine weather forecasting, optimum track ship routing, aviation weather forecasting, and resource protection to groups.
• You will serve as a meteorological advisor to Commanding Officers and Masters of vessels engaged in sustained military operations or long-haul transits in the world's oceans.
• You will assist in meteorological and oceanographic training of 100+ active duty and civilian personnel assigned to the Operations Department.

• This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

• This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
• This is a Mission critical position.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• The work will require long periods sitting and some periods of standing and walking. A high degree of mental and manual dexterity is necessary.
• When high priority work is established in a limited amount of time, the incumbent may be required to work at top speed for several hours at a time.
• Occasional lifting and carrying of bulky documents of 20 pounds maximum may be required.
• Incumbent may be required to work a rotating watch bill as scheduled or as high operational demands dictate (surge manning). Notification of hours may be short-fused and require compensation at a later date.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

• Experience exercising formal supervisory authority, including developing performance standards, evaluating civilian/military personnel, and managing a multi-tiered workforce through subordinate supervisors or team leads.
• Experience formally supervising a multidisciplinary technical workforce in an operational meteorological or meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) environment, including setting performance standards, evaluating work, developing personnel, and making or recommending personnel actions. Experience must also include directing work through subordinate supervisors, division leads, or watch-team leaders.
• Experience providing senior scientific and technical leadership in operational meteorology/METOC, including evaluating or applying advanced weather-prediction capabilities and leading or overseeing the transition of research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) capabilities into operational use. This includes coordination with scientific, technical, and operational partners.
• Experience serving in a senior operational leadership role supporting maritime and/or aviation operations, including assessing and resolving complex weather-related operational or safety risks and overseeing or supporting maritime routing operations, such as Optimum Track Ship Routing (OTSR). Experience must include delivering time-sensitive meteorological risk briefings and recommendations to senior military, civilian, allied, or coalition leaders.

*Minimum Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in meteorology, atmospheric science and/or physical oceanography with three years' experience in extended weather prediction, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience in meteorology.*

Meteorology Series, 1340:

A. Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:

1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
   
   • Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics
   • Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale)
   • Three semester hours of physical meteorology.
   • Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
   • Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.
   • Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.
   • At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.

*There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.
