Wage: $23.24 - $27.33 per hour
Stedman Community Hospice at St. Joseph's Lifecare Centre Brantford is seeking a casual Registered Practical Nurse. The Registered Practical Nurse will assume a lead role in providing high quality end of life care to the residents at Stedman Community Hospice. As part of the interdisciplinary team, the RPN contributes to the development, implementation and communication of the resident’s care plan and reports any substantial findings and/or changes in resident’s condition and actively contributes to solutions. It is expected that the RPN will be a positive example and role model and will promote a resident focused, goal-oriented approach to care, nurturing a home like environment and in keeping with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre/Stedman Community Hospice. All duties will be carried out in accordance with the College of Nurses Standards.
Key Accountabilities and Success Criteria
- Gives direction for all aspects of residents care and giving oversight to other members of the care team in accordance with the Regulated Health Professionals Act and the College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards
- Recognizes, assesses and responds to resident health status changes
- Provides leadership to the team, working collaboratively with them to assess workload, assign caseload and priorities each shift
- Performs physical, psychosocial, spiritual and emotional assessment of the resident, including their families
- Creates an environment and provides opportunities for the person and their family to exercise religious, cultural and spiritual rituals, customs, rites and beliefs throughout the person’s illness and through bereavement
- Responds to ethical issues using ethical framework (YODA) and anticipates and addresses ethical and legal issues that may be encountered when caring for individuals with life-limiting conditions
- Ensures all medications are processed and recorded according to legislative and regulative requirements
- Administers medication and treatments as required/ordered, monitors for effectiveness and side effects
- Aware of the limits of individual competencies and scope of practice, consulting with RN when delivery of care exceeds scope

Requirements
Qualifications and Skills
- Graduate of an accredited college nursing program
- Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Excellent palliative pain and symptom management skills
- Demonstrated confidence working autonomously and collaboratively with members of the interdisciplinary team
- Excellent critical thinking skills and able to use judgement to assess and intervene in critical situations
- Culturally sensitive
- Ability to lead a team, diffuse conflict and manage an environment which is often highly emotionally charged
- Hospice/Palliative Care Certification preferred
- CAPCE training preferred
- Certificate in Fundamentals in Palliative Care
