Description
Position Summary
The Program Director reports to the Executive Director, supervises the Program team, and has broad responsibility for the strategy and success of the League’s programs. These include ongoing series such as Current Work, Emerging Voices, the League Prize, Student Program, Mentorship Program, From Field to Form, and the Gunther Prize, as well as After Hours and other members-only programs. The Program Director additionally conceives of and directs new programs, as well as limited-run public programs on special topics, competitions, design studies, and publications, in consultation with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. The Program Director also serves as a lead staff researcher on topics in contemporary architecture, as well as the practices, writers, consultants, and theorists shaping and advancing the discipline and practice.
Ongoing Programs
With staff support and in coordination with the Executive Director, the Program Director researches, directs, and manages all aspects of ongoing programs, including their conceptualization, the selection of participants, and programming expressed as events, competitions, and publications. Examples of ongoing programs include:
- Current Work

- League Prize
- Student Program
- Mentorship Program
- From Field to Form
- The Gunther Prize
- After Hours
In coordination with the Director of Development and Communications, the Program Director is further responsible for the development and stewardship of the League’s relationship with program participant alumni.
Other Programs
In coordination with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, the Editor-in-Chief of Urban Omnibus, the Director of Development and Communications, and the Director of Research and Operations, the Program Director additionally conceives of and directs new ongoing and limited-run public and members-only programs—these could include special topic investigations, competitions, exhibitions, design studies, publications, and more. Current examples include:
- Architecture, Planning, and International Law
- Working Communities, Working Architecture
- Sign and Line
Research and Others
The Program Director is expected to stay abreast of major developments in the cultures of the built environment, to periodically report on said developments to League staff, and to advise and consult with all staff on programming as needed. Other duties may be assigned by the Executive Director, including occasional fundraising or the representation of the League at public events.
Terms
This is a full-time position. Candidates must be located in, or willing to relocate to, the New York City region. At this time, the League is unable to pay relocation expenses, and has limited means to sponsor work visas. The salary range for this position is $95,000–$120,000. Benefits include health insurance and paid time off (vacation, sick days, personal days, holidays), as well as subsidized monthly transit and a 401(k) plan after six months of employment. The advertised pay scale reflects the good-faith minimum and maximum salary range for this role. The specific compensation offered may be dependent on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.

Requirements
Qualifications and Skills
Required skills:
- Demonstrated commitment to The Architectural League’s mission: to support critically transformative work in the fields of the built environment that addresses the converging crises of racism, inequity, and climate change
- A graduate degree and 6+ years of relevant experience, including public program management; educational, curatorial, and/or editorial work; practice in the fields of the built environment; or some combination therein
- Experience conceiving and organizing programs that engage diverse practitioners, perspectives, and audiences, and that expand participation in conversations about the built environment
- Strategic thinker who can partner with the Executive Director and relevant Board committees to holistically envision The Architectural League’s future
Superb communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with a range of colleagues and partners (e.g., board members, funders, volunteers, and advocates) - Dedicated team leader with experience training and mentoring staff and volunteers
- Competent knowledge of social media, software (Google Apps, Word, Excel, etc.), and standard office equipment
- Administrative and organizational skills necessary to carry out the job description responsibilities
- A good team player in a collaborative work environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- A sense of proportion and a sense of humor
Preferred skills:
- Experienced public speaker
- Experience with effectively managing and developing distributed teams
Physical Requirements:
- This is a hybrid position with some mandatory in-office days. The League currently targets a 32-hour regular workweek
- Evening and weekend work required; Program Director is ultimately responsible for ensuring adequate League presence at all public events
- Some travel required
- Ability to sit or stand at a computer workstation for extended periods of time
- Ability to maintain physical records and files by bending, reaching, and occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff members and other stakeholders by email, phone, virtually, and in person
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions
- Ability to work in an open office space
