POSITION SUMMARY
The Principal leads the school community in a shared mission focused on student achievement. This role requires vision, leadership, and accountability in instructional quality, staff supervision, and community engagement. The Principal reports to the Superintendent and supervises all building staff and students.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Instructional Leadership
a. Establish a vision aligned with district goals and lead the implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP).
b. Guide curriculum alignment and hold staff accountable according to District Curriculum Management Plan, PLCs, RTI, Standards based grading and instructional best practices.
c. Use multiple data sources to drive instructional decisions and assess effectiveness.
d. Provide for the professional development needs of teachers and staff, as identified in the SIP and district vision.
e. Observe classrooms regularly/daily, provide meaningful feedback, and ensure accountability for teaching, assessment, team, PLC, and RTI quality.
f. Hold staff accountable to high expectations. Use a variety of monitoring structures, e.g., informal observation, assessment analysis, formal lesson observation, plans of improvement, etc., to improve instruction and assessment.
2. Culture and Climate
a. Foster a welcoming working and learning environment, and accountable school culture.
b. Promote high expectations and continuous improvement. Promotes and models professionalism.
c. Celebrate achievements and ensure a harassment-free environment.
d. Promote equitable discipline and student engagement.
e. Lead according to the Nine Characteristics of High Performing Schools.
f. Promote and facilitate the implementation of handbooks, building and district plans (i.e. staff handbook, PLC plan, Assessment plan, and Professional Development plan).
3. Staff Development and Supervision
a. Recruit, assign, evaluate, and support staff in alignment with collective bargaining agreements.
b. Provide meaningful professional development aligned to building and district goals and vision.
c. Address underperformance and recognize excellence.
4. Communication and Collaboration
a. Maintain effective communication with students, staff, parents, and the community.
b. Engage stakeholders in decision-making and continuous improvement. Share leadership responsibilities when appropriate to build commitment.
c. Promote school initiatives and foster partnerships with parents and community to benefit school culture and safety. Builds relationship with parents and community members through inclusive initiatives and shared decision making,
d. Develop and maintain effective community relationships; seek community support to form new partnerships as aligned with the school mission, vision and SIP; foster relationships with other organizations and partners; involve staff in partnership activities; promote the school to attract enrollment; maintain positive media relationships and is responsive to parent concerns.
e. Communicate with and report to Superintendent regularly on activities and challenges. Accepts feedback professionally and respectfully.
5. Safety and Operations
a. Ensure a safe and orderly environment; implement safety protocols.
b. Maintain facilities, budgets, and crisis response plans. Train community in emergency response.
c. Conduct regular safety drills and collaborate with local authorities.
d. Supervises all building staff and students. Promotes and leads positive student and staff behavior initiatives to establish a sound learning culture and environments.
e. Is ethical and just in leading and managing people and programs.
6. Management and Compliance
a. Administer resources aligned with SIP and district priorities.
b. Ensure legal compliance in staffing, policy, procedures, budgeting, and programs. Maintain and update
handbooks.
c. Lead and supervise extracurricular programs and foster school pride.
d. Follow best practices in hiring and dismissal of staff according to the law and collective bargaining
agreements.
e. Knowledgeable about and comply with all relevant state and federal laws and regulations, board policies,
and collective bargaining agreements.
Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master’s degree in education and five years of successful teaching experience.
2. Valid Washington State principal certification.
3. Demonstrated integrity, strong work ethic, and effective communication skills.
4. Experienced and skilled in leading Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), Response to Intervention (RTI), differentiated instruction, and Standard Based Grading
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Three years of successful administrative experience.
2. Experience as a secondary administrator and teacher.
3. Skills in evaluation, budgeting, curriculum, and technology.
4. Commitment to putting children first, providing discipline that promotes student success, and working effectively and respectfully with all people.
5. Willingness to participate in after-hours events.
6. Experience in leadership of secondary athletic programs and extracurricular activities
