Location: Portland, Maine (Hybrid Eligible)
MaineHealth is seeking a Corporate Counsel to join our Legal Services team and support one of the largest and most integrated healthcare systems in northern New England. This role provides legal guidance across a wide range of healthcare operational, regulatory, and strategic matters while partnering closely with clinical, administrative, and executive leaders.
Position Summary
The Corporate Counsel will provide practical, timely legal advice to MaineHealth and its affiliated entities, supporting the organization’s mission to improve the health and well-being of our communities. This role will focus on healthcare operations and transactions while ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel on healthcare regulatory matters, including compliance, risk mitigation, and operational issues
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts and agreements (e.g., physician services, vendor agreements, affiliation agreements)
- Support system initiatives such as mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic partnerships
- Advise internal stakeholders on legal risks and recommend practical solutions aligned with organizational goals
- Collaborate with compliance, risk management, and other internal teams
- Monitor and interpret changes in healthcare laws and regulations and assess operational impact
- Support corporate governance activities, including policies and board-related matters, as assigned
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Maine required. Admission to Maine State Bar required.
- Five years of experience representing healthcare clients and demonstrating knowledge of health law, commercial contracting, patient privacy laws and other legal topics associated with the representation of health care providers required
- Experience in a healthcare system, law firm with healthcare clients, or in-house counsel role strongly preferred
- Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
