Position Information

Requires are least a high school diploma or equivalent. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Maintained a valid CDL for a minimum of three (3) years prior to application.
- Satisfactory attendance record, with no more than one (1) unexcused absence in the previous six (6) months.
- Excellent customer service record, with no customer complaints in the previous twelve (12) months.
- No preventable motor vehicle accidents within the previous six (6) months.
- No more than three (3) minor moving violations within the previous 36 months; no major moving violations.
- No preventable work-related injuries within the previous twelve (12) months.
- No disciplinary actions within the previous one (1) year.
Provides effective one-on-one training to new operators and trainees. This training is essential to ensure and maintain the highest standards of safety and service. When not actively training, this position will be utilized in the safe operation of buses on campus routes and occasional charters. This position may participate in various related administrative functions as assigned by management as well as offer support to day-to-day transit operations based on departmental needs. This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing by the US Department of Transportation.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Good verbal and written communication skills and an ability to work with people of various backgrounds and skill levels.
- Possess the ability to explain and demonstrate difficult or abstract concepts related to vehicle operation to people with little or no experience is necessary to be successful.
- Ability to demonstrate a safe driving record.
Bending, stooping, reaching, standing, sitting, pushing, pulling from time to time. Work is outdoors in parking lots (in all weather) occasionally, as well as indoors, on buses and vans. Driving to perform job related duties.

Duties/Responsibilities
New Operator Training:
- Provides behind-the-wheel training for new operators and trainees.
- Evaluates new operator driving skills using appropriate checklists and evaluation forms.
- Provides appropriate feedback to new operators.
- Assesses the competence of new operators.
- Ensures operators are fully trained prior to being released into service.
- Serves as role model and mentor to new operator.
Continual Training Administration:
- Conducts on-board evaluations and in-service training to operators according to schedule and/or need.
- Provides behind-the-wheel retraining as directed.
- Performs check rides and road observations as requested.
- Completes documentation forms in accordance with State, Federal, and local requirements.
- Identifies retraining needs.
- Recognizes and reports safe and unsafe actions/conditions to Management.
- Provides feedback to Training Specialists regarding training needs.
- Assists training department in identifying additional or refresher training needs based on current trends within the employee base.
- Assists in creating training-related content for safety meetings, orientations, and lab training.
- Assists training department in creating and editing training materials.
- Assists in trainer training new road trainers.
Bus Operations:
- Safe operation of buses on route and occasional charters.
- Wash buses and perform other non-driving related duties as required from time to time.
- Complete paperwork associated with assignments.
- Attend safety meetings as scheduled.
Other duties as assigned.
