Description
The Associate Analyst will help support the research effort of the investment research team, which is responsible for evaluating and selecting the stocks that make up our equity portfolios. The Associate will assist in all aspects of the research process, which include:
- Reading 10Ks and other SEC filings
- Updating investment cases following quarterly results
- Digesting sell-side research and planning calls with broker analysts
- Financial modelling
Requirements
We are looking for genuine and demonstrable curiosity. An ideal candidate does not necessarily need to have experience in the stock market – though this would be a plus – but they must be able to show that they are intrinsically motivated by the process of inquiry and information-gathering that lies at the heart of equity research. The role is highly self-directed with few deliverables and light supervision; an ideal candidate will be able to consistently apply their attention to the study of how businesses work and what makes a good investment. Other requirements include:
- Proficiency in financial accounting
- Strong academic record with coursework in economics and finance
- Desire to live in Richmond, VA
Program Structure:
Year 1-2:
- Associate will learn about the value investment discipline broadly and TSW’s philosophy specifically
- Through daily study of existing and potential portfolio names, the Associate will build an understanding of business models across industries
- Gain proficiency in valuation math and developing an investment case
- Associate will begin CFA program, which requires passing three exams covering accounting, economics, fixed income, equities, derivatives and other financial topics
Year 3-4:
- Associates will broaden their knowledge base of businesses and go deeper on a handful of industries with the goal of taking over primary coverage of certain portfolio names
- Associate will practice valuing companies and sizing risk/rewards with the goal of independently pitching new ideas
- Completion of CFA program
After 3-4 years, we will be able to determine the candidate's passion for stock research and their fit at TSW. After this period, opportunities for advancement will be determined by the investment team.
