Description
DescriptionThe School of Biological Sciences seeks a full-time 9 month, non-tenure-track assistant professor of practice to assist in delivery of the curricula for degree programs in the School of Biological Sciences. In particular, we seek to hire an individual who can assist with delivery of our non-majors general biology/zoology courses (i.e., PLB 115, ZOOL 115 or ZOOL 118) and our introductory biology courses (particularly BIOL 213 and BIOL 212). The former courses are high-enrollment University Core Curriculum courses, and the latter courses are required courses for most life sciences majors. Successful applicants may also assist with delivery of seminar courses in Biological Sciences and Zoology (e.g., ZOOL 215). Applicants with relevant taxonomic or disciplinary expertise could also assist with delivery of upper-level courses in the life sciences.
Due to the newly established $100,000 fee for H-1B petitions requesting consular processing outside of the U.S., Southern Illinois University is unable to provide H-1B sponsorship at this time for any prospective applicant who is outside of the U.S. and requires consular processing.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
Examples of Duties
The successful applicant will primarily teach courses in general biology for non-life sciences majors and/or introductory biology for life sciences majors and upper-level courses as appropriate. The teaching assignment will be based on a workload equivalent of twenty-four (24) credit hours of teaching per academic year for a 1.0 FTE appointment, and the successful applicant will be expected to keep up to 6 hours per week of office hours. The successful applicant will also coordinate their curricula with other instructors teaching in the non-majors or introductory life sciences course series and will work with other instructors as well as School of Biological Sciences staff to develop and enhance laboratory exercises for these courses. Support and positively contribute to SIU's mission of student success and retention through actions and responsibilities within this role.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in a life sciences discipline by date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior life sciences teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
